I got sick in Mexico

About a month ago (or whenever it was that I got sick in Mexico), I went to the wedding of a friend. I should tell you that the wedding was very fun, in spite of the mexican intestinal bug I brought back. It was one of the most amazing places ever, actually. Very beautiful, Mexico, ahhh, I can't wait to go back!

When I got sick in Mexico, none of the medications I'd brought with me helped. Someone advised me to go to a local pharmacy, and the medications and advice I got there really helped me.

• Always drink carbonated water. Not only do you know for sure that's it's not just tap water poured into a bottle, but the carbonation fights bacteria.

• If I wind up in a situation where I've eaten something suspicious, I try to order a shot of straight alcohol. Vodka, tequila, gin, whisky - anything. One shot is enough to kill off strange bacteria.

• Don't travel without health insurance. I did that once and it cost me an enormous amount of money. There's no reason to be in a position where it costs a thousand dollars (US) just to walk into an emergency room. Get insurance.
